Junbesi is a picturesque village in the Solu Khumbu region of Nepal, situated at an altitude of 2,700 meters. It lies on the trekking route to Everest and is predominantly inhabited by the Sherpa community. The village is home to Thupten Chholing Monastery, an important center for Tibetan Buddhism, which is integral to the cultural and spiritual heritage of Junbesi.
In 2024, the former school principal, Kazi Sherpa, approached Nepal Evergreen with a request to plant a mixture of trees, including Walnut, Kiwi, Apple, Peach, Pear, and Apricot, on land cleared in preparation for planting by the river below a new school built after the earthquake in 2015. Junbesi’s economy is based on agriculture, animal husbandry, and tourism, offering basic amenities and warm hospitality to trekkers.
In 2025, we are proud to continue supporting Kazi Sherpa’s efforts by planting an additional 1,000 fruit trees. We are also supporting the growth of a new plantation at the Thupten Chholing Monastery, helping to preserve the environment and contribute to the monastery’s ongoing cultural and spiritual work.
Additionally, we are introducing educational practices at the local school and monastery to promote sustainable farming techniques. Through workshops and hands-on training, both the students and the monks will learn methods for soil conservation, organic farming, and tree planting aimed at carbon absorption. By fostering this knowledge, we aim to create a community that is both environmentally responsible and economically resilient for the future.
